Sweeny Todd Musical Background

Written by Hugh Wheeler, this Tony Award Winning musical has songs and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and is based on the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Sweeney Todd is a tale that spans fifteen years and centers around the false imprisonment of it’s protagonist in Australia, and his revenge-filled actions when he returns to Fleet Street to find the Judge who sentenced him and raped his wife.

The musical begins with Sweeney Todd and his friend, Anthony Hope, taking a ship back to London from Australia. The two characters serve as complete opposites, Hope is hopeful about his return to his home, where conversely Sweeney Todd is vengeful. Upon returning to his abandonded apartment, Sweeney Todd finds his home and hos surroundings even more terrible then when he last left. He soon meets Mrs. Lovett, the woman that owns a pie shop below his apartment. Mrs. Lovett unknowingly begins to tell him the tale of Benjamin Barker, the barber who used to live above her and was wrongly sentenced to prison in Australia by a Judge who wanted Barker’s wife. She further explains that Barker’s wife killed herself after this Judge raped her, and took her daughter in as a ward in his home.

It doesn’t take Mrs. Lovett long to realize that Sweeney Todd and Benjamin Barker are the same man, and she and him soon join forces to right the wrongs that have taken place over the last fifteen years. What follows is an exciting and beautifully dark tale of blackmail, bloodshed, and love. Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett soon turn crazy when after Sweeney Todd’s first murder, they quickly decide to use the dead bodies in Mrs. Lovett’s pies. Business booms, and attracts the attention of a begging woman, and towns people who are curious of the pie shops strange smells. Although it is clear the Sweeney Todd has his eye on the lovely young ward of Judge Turpin, Johnanna, Mrs. Lovett holds on to a hope that she and Sweeney Todd will be together forever. At the same time, his old friend Anthony has also expressed an interest in Johnanna, and Sweeney Todd attempts to set him up for failure. All of this is going on as people become increasingly curious of the goings on of the pie shop, causing Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett to kill off all of those who get too close. This includes the begging woman, who towards the end of the musical Sweeney Todd realizes was actually his wife and begins to uncover Mrs. Lovetts lies and ulterior motives.

Although Sweeney Todd ends in sadness, it is a beautiful tale of love, regret and revenge. It is truly a sight to be seen with elaborate and spectacular song and dance pieces that depict the eerie longing of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sweeney Todd.
