In 1970 they were named the Texas Chaparrals. In the 1972-73 season the team moved to San Antonio and were renamed the San Antonio Spurs, that year the team aquired the "Iceman" George Gervin, and Swen Neter. The San Antonio made the playoffs that year but lost to the Indiana Pacers in six games. In 1976 the San Antonio Spurs joined the NBA as part of the ABA merger. The San Antonio Spurs finised the 90 season with a 56-26 record and losing in the Western Conference semi-finals to the Portland Trail Blazers. In the 1994-95 season the San Antonio Spurs posted a 62-20 record and reached the Western Conference Final again, but lost to the Houston Rockets. In the 1997 draft the San Antonio Spurs selected Tim Duncan from Wake Forest University. That year the Spurs made it all the way to the Western Conference Semi-finals but lost to the Utah Jazz. In 1998-99 season the San Antonio Spurs dominated, and lost one game in the Western Conference and captured their first Western Conference Championship and their first NBA Champhionship against the New York Knicks in five games. In the 2002-03 season the new starting point guard for the San Antonio Spurs was Tony Parker, and included a number of new players. The San Antonio Spurs posted a 60-22 record and won the NBA Championship for a second time against the New Jersey Nets in six games. In 2005 the San Antonio Spurs posted a 59-23 record and when on two win their third NBA Championship in seven years. That same year Manu Ginobili became an NBA Star and made the All-Star team. In the 2007 NBA Finals the San Antonio Spurs captured yet again another NBA Championship. The future looks good for the San Antonio Spurs as they return many players from the Championship team.
