Seattle Supersonics Information and History. The Seattle SuperSonics begin play in 1967. The SuperSonics initially struggled to win games. Bill Russell was hired in 1975 as head coach and led the Seattle Supersonics to the playoffs for the first time. In 1977 Lenny Wilken returned to coach the Seattle Supersonics again. Wilkens led the Seattle SuperSonics to their first Western Conference Championship and won, but lost to the Washington Bullets in seven games. The following season the SuperSonics cruised to their first NBA Championship defeating the Washington Bullets in five games. The following year the Seattle SuperSonics posted yet again another strong season but lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in Western Conference Finals in five games. The rest of the 80's the Seattle Supersonics did not achieve the same success. In 1989 the Seattle SuperSonics drafted Shawn Kemp and in 1990 drafted Gary Payton, and in 1992 the arrival of new head coach George Karl led to a new breed of Supersonics. In the 1992-93 season the Seattle SuperSonics made it to the Western Conference Finals but lost in seven games to the Phoenix Suns. The following year the Seattle SuperSonics had the best record in the NBA, but lost in one of the biggest upsets in history to the Denver Nuggets. In the 1995-96 season the Seattle Supersonics posted a franchise record of 64-18 record but lost to the Chicago Bulls in six games. In early 2000's the team struggled it was not till the 2004-05 season with Ray Allen running the show that the Seattle SuperSonics captured their sixth division title. In 2007, the Seattle SuperSonics used the second draft pick to select Kevin Durant from Texas, on June 28, 2007 they traded Ray Allen and the 35th pick for Jeff Green Boston 5th pick, Wally Szczerbiak, and Delonte West. The Sonics are young but look to compete behind the talented Kevin Durant.
