In 1997, the Seattle Mariners won the AL West. Seattle Mariners marched into the playoffs but faced the Baltimore Orioles and lost three games to one in the ALDS. In 1998 and 1999, the Seattle Mariners had losing season due to the poor pitching staff. Long time pitcher for the Seattle Mariners was traded to the Houston Astros. In 1999, the Seattle Mariners moved to their new stadium SAFECO Field. After the 1999 season, Ken Griffey requested to be traded to the Cincinnati Reds.

The Seattle Mariners also hosted the All-Star that year and had a team record eight all-stars: Jeff Nelson, Freddy Garcia, Kazuhiro Sasaki, John Olerud, Bret Boone, Mike Cameron, Edgar Martinez, and Ichiro Suzuki. The Seattle Mariners won the AL West easily. Ichiro also won some individual awards for the Seattle Mariners like: Gold Glove Award, AL Rookie of the Year, and AL MVP. In the playoffs the Seattle Mariners defeated the Cleveland Indians by coming back from a 3-2 deficit. The Seattle Mariners advanced to the ALCS to face the New York Yankees but lost for the second year in a row with a score of 4 games to 1. In the 2002-2003, the Seattle Mariners try start off were they had begin the previous years but failed to qualify for the playoffs in both years. In 2002, Lou Piniella left the Seattle Mariners for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Seattle Mariners replaced him with Bob Melvin. The 2004 season saw the downfall of the Seattle Mariners, except for some personal player accomplishments like Ichiro breaking George Sisler's single season record for hits in a season of 257 hits. Ichiro ended the season with 262 hits. At the end of the season Bob Melvin was fired and Mike Hargrove replaced him on October 20, 2004. The 2006-07 season saw the emergence of young talent and a strong pitching staff for the Seattle Mariners. In the middle of the season in 2007, Mike Hargrove resigned and was replaced by John McLaren. The Seattle Mariners missed the playoffs but one highlight for the season was the performance by Ichiro who for the seventh consecutive season hit for 200 hits in a season.
