Houston Rockets Information and History. The Houston Rockets joined the NBA in 1967 as part of the expansion team that was based in San Diego. In 1986 the Houston Rockets won the Western Conference Championship and played in the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, but lost in six games. In 1994 the Houston Rockets would win their first NBA Championship, defeating the New York Knicks. In 1994 the Houston Rockets aquired Clyde Drexler, who helped the Houston Rockets capture another NBA Championship against the Orlando Magic. The Houston Rockets struggled from then on. It was till the 2002 draft that the Houston Rockets aquired center Yao Ming from the Shanghai Sharks in China. In 2003-04 season also came the arrival of Tracy McGrady and the departure of other players like Cutino Mobley. Injuries have plagued the Houston Rockets since 2005.
