The New York Yankees is a professional baseball team out of the borough of the Bronx, in New York City, New York. The New York Yankees are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. The New York Yankees were founded in 1901 and have been in New York since 1903. The New York Yankees are one of the original eight charter franchises. The New York Yankees were founded in Baltimore as the Orioles and moved in 1903 and became the New York Islanders. In 1913, the team became the New York Yankees. The New York Yankees have played their ball games in Yankee Stadium since 1976. The New York Yankees are owned by George Steinbrenner.

Babe Ruth joined the New York Yankees in 1920 from the Boston Red Sox and so begin the 86 year curse. The following year the New York Yankees returned to the World Series but lost to the Giants. The New York Yankees moved to their new home in the Bronx with the first triple-deck venue. In the first game at Yankees Stadium, Babe Ruth homered, and is nicknamed "The House That Ruth Built". For the third time in three years the New York Yankees reached the World Series and faced the Giants, who they finally beat for their first World Series Championship. In 1927, the New Yankees posted a lineup dubbed the "Murderers' Row", and is considered to be the best team in baseball history. The team won 110 games and lost 44 games and won the World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Lou Gehrig had 175 RBI's, batted .373, and had 47 Homeruns. In 1931, Joe McCarthy became the manager of the New York Yankees, and in 1932 they defeated the Chicago Cubs in the World Series.
From 1936 to 1951, is known as the Joe DiMaggio Era. From 1936 to 1939 the New York Yankees won four World Series. July 4, 1939 is "Lou Gehrig Day", and is the first number retired in baseball. By many historian is considered a great year in baseball as to major feats occured, one was Ted Williams hunting to hit .400, and the other was Joe DiMaggio's 56 game consecutive hit streak. In 1951, Joe DiMaggio retired and marked the arrival of future star Mickey Mantle. From 1951-1959, it is considered to be the Stengel Era. The New York Yankees would win seven World Series titles and 10 American League Pennants, with players like Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Mickey Mantle. In the 1956 World Series in game five against the Dodgers, pitcher Don Larsen threw the only perfect game in the World Series history. The New York Yankees lost the 1957 World Series against the Milwaukee Braves. Elston Howard is the first Africa-America player during this time, and the New York Yankees also acquired Roger Maris. From 1960 to 1964, it is known as the Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle Era. In 1961, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris put on a Homerun show. Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth single season Homerun record of 60 Homeruns, by hitting 61 Homeruns. In 1961, the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, the following year the New York Yankees would defeat the San Francisco Giants in seven games to capture another World Series.
In 1964, after the New York Yankees were purchased 80% by CBS, the team struggled. It would be till January 3, 1973 that the New York Yankees would be purchased by a group of investors led George Steinbrenner for $8.7 million. In 1974, Steinbrenner that would revolutionize baseball, it was the beginning of free agency, in which he signed a player James Augustus "Catfish" Hunter from the Oakland Athletics. With these bold moves the New York Yankees reached the World Series but faced the mighty "Big Red Machine" Cincinnati Reds and lost. Another bold move that Steinbrenner made was the acquisition of Reggie Jackson, a controversial move that alienated a lot of New York Yankees players. Reggie Jackson proved everyone wrong and in the 1977, World Series he hit four Homeruns on four consecutive pitches from Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers, giving him the name, "Mr. October". The year 1978, was a year that exemplifies the rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. On the last day of the 1978 season the New York Yankees were tied for the AL East, and a one-game playoff was held at Fenway Park to decide who would go on to the playoffs. The New York Yankees won the game with a score of 5-4. The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS for the third year in a row and set up a rematch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers to win their 22nd World Championship. After the New York Yankees lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1981 World Series, they would struggle to make the playoffs. During this time Don Mattingly became the most winningest player for any major leaguer, but failed to win the World Series. With the New York Yankees enduring a lot of turmoil during the 80's and early 90's the emphasis moved to the development of the farm system. Buck Showalter manager, general managers Bob Watson, and Gene Michael. This new emphasis brought players like Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettite, Mariano Rivera, and Bernie Williams.
From 1996 to 2007, is considered the Joe Torre Era. Joe Torre replaced Showalter as the new manager. In the 1996, playoffs the New York Yankees faced the Baltimore Orioles who they defeated in the ALCS. The New York Yankees faced the Atlanta Braves who they defeated to win the World Series Championship and end the 18-year Championship drought. That year also Derek Jeter was named Rookie of the Year. In 1997, the New York Yankees lost in the ALDS against the Cleveland Indians. In 1998, the New York Yankees won 125 games and lost 50 games. The 125 win solidified with a World Series Championship against the San Diego Padres. This team set a major league record with wins and is considered to be one of the greatest teams in baseball history. In that season David Wells also pitched a perfect game against the Minnesota Twins. The following year David Cone pitched a perfect game against the Montreal Expos. The New York Yankees cruised to the playoffs and for the third straight year they faced the Texas Rangers and defeated them in the ALDS. In the ALCS the New York Yankees faced the Boston Red Sox, who they defeated in five games. The New York Yankees would go on to win the 1999 World Series Championship. In 2000, the New York Yankees pulled a repeat from the following year, this time defeating the Oakland Athletics in the ALDS, and defeating the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS. This win solidified a Subway Series matchup with the New York Mets. The New York Yankees won the World Series and completed there three-peat of Championships. In 2001, the New York Yankees faced made it all the way to the World Series by defeating the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners, but would lose to the Arizona Diamondbacks in seven games. In 2003, the New York Yankees reached the World Series again by defeating the Minnesota Twins, and the Boston Red Sox, but lost to the Florida Marlins in six games. In 2003, the New York Yankees acquired Alex Rodriguez and Gary Shefield, the team managed to make it all the way to the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox. The New York Yankees went on to lead the series up 3-0 but would lose and the Boston Red Sox would go on to win the World Series ending, "The Curse of the Bambino". In 2005, Alex Rodriguez became the first New York Yankees player since Don Mattingly to win the AL MVP award. The New York Yankees would make it to the playoffs but would lose against the Angels in the ALDS. The following season the New York Yankees acquired Johnny Damon from the Boston Red Sox, and the team made it all the way to the ALDS and lost to the Detroit Tigers in four games. In 2007, a couple of personal feats occured like Alex Rodriguez hitting his 500th Homerun and Derek Jeter got his 6th consecutive 200-hit season. The New York Yankees lost in the ALDS against the Cleveland Indians in four games. In 2008, with Joe Torre gone, Steinbrenner hired Joe Girardi as the manager.
