New Jersey Nets Information and History. The New Jersey Nets begin in 1967 as part of the American Basketball Association, and were initially called the New Jersey Americans. The following season the team was renamed the New York Nets and played their games in Long Island. In 1972 with the aquisitiong Rick Barry the Nets advanced to the ABA Finals, but lost to the Indiana Pacers. In the 1973-74 season the Nets luck would change with the aquisition of "Dr. J", Julius Irving from the Virginia Squires. The Nets finished with a record of 55 wins, and won their first ABA Championship against the Utah Stars. The following season the Nets set a team record of 58 wins, but lost to the Spirits of St. Louis in the first round. Once again in the 1976 season the Nets would capture the ABA Championship against the Denver Nuggets. In 1976 the Nets joined the NBA, and moved to New Jersey. The 1980's were not so kind for the New Jersey Nets, in the 1983-84 season the Nets reached the Eastern Conference Semifinals but lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games. In 2002, the New Jersey Nets were revamped with talent, Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin, Richard Jefferson, and head coach Byron Scott. The Nets won the Atlantic Division and sealed a first place Eastern Conference seed. The New Jersey Nets captured their first Eastern Conference Championship. In the NBA Finals they faced the powerful Los Angeles Lakers, who swept them. In 2003, the New Jesey Nets advanced once again to the NBA finals only to lose to the San Antonio Spurs. In 2005-06 season the New Jersey Nets aquired high flyer Vince Carter from the Toronto Raptors. The New Jersey Nets have all the pieces in place to make another run for that illusive Championship.
