The Nascar Sprint All-Star is a Nascar Race held yearly at the Lowe's Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway) in Concord, North Carolina. The Nascar Sprint All-Star Race was formerly known as "The Winston" from 1984-1993, and was held in 1985 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. From 1994 to 2007, race was called the Nextel All-Star Challenage. The Nascar Sprint All-Star allows racers based on the race winners or winner in the past season, also winners in ten event winners and past decade Cup Series Champions, and also if the are one of the top two finishers in the Sprint Showdown qualifing race. The only driver to ever win the All-Star Race after entering via a qualifying race is Michael Waltrip in 1996. The Nascar Sprint All-Star Race has taken place at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, except for 1986, when it was held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The Nascar Sprint All-Star Race is made up of a special format of racing. In 2007, the format that was adapted was of four identical segments, or "quarters", and in the fourth quarter caution laps do not count. The first winner for the Nascar Sprint All-Star race Terry Labonte was in a one segment, which means it was 70 laps and only one pit stop in 1985. In 1987-1989, a three segment rule was in effect for the Nascar Sprint All-Star race. The format for the Nascar Sprint All-Star race was made up the first segment which included a 75-lap, with a mandatory green flag pit stop, a 50-Lap , and a 10 green flag lap final sprint. Each segment included a 10 minute break.
From 1990-1991, a two segment rule was placed for the Nascar Sprint All-Star Race, which included a 50 Lap segment, a 20 Lap Segment, and 10 minute break between segments.
From 1992-1997, was made up of 70-laps, which included two 30 Lap segments, and one 10 Green Lap segments, which included 10 minute break periods for the Nascar Sprint All-Star race.
In 1998-2001, the race was a 70 Green Laps race, which was made up of two 30 Lap segments, one 10 Lap segment, and the catch being that green flag lap counted in any segment, also the second ten minute break was eliminated and replaced with caution laps, and cars had the option to use the pit, at the cost of losing position.
In 2002-2003, the Nascar Sprint All-Star Race was made up of 90 Laps. The first segment was 40 Laps, a mandatory four-tire pit stop and only 20 cars advance to the next segment. The second segment was a 30 Lap, 14 cars in 2003, and in 2002 10 cars advance. In the third segment 20 Green Laps, and no caution laps counted.
In 2004-2006 Nascar Sprint All-Star Race, the race became the same 90 laps but with different rules for the segments. The first segment included 40 laps, with mandatory pit stop on four tires between laps 13 and 16, random inversion (6-12) at the end of segment, and 10 minute break. The second segment was 30 Laps, and optional pit stops. In the third segment 20 Green Flag Laps, and no caution laps counted.
In 2007, the race was four twenty laps for the Nascar Sprint All-Star Race. The first segment was 20 Laps, and pits were optional during five-Lap caution period. The winner of the first segment was awarded $75,000, $20,000 for second place, and third place got $10,000. In the second segment ten minute halftime break were included, no inversion of the field, and the First place winner won $75,000, second place won $20,000, and third place won $10,000. In the third segment, a mandatory pit stop was put in place during the five-lap caution period. In the fourth segment 20 Green flag Laps.
For 2008, the Nascar Sprint All-Star race will have 100 Laps, and 25 Lap Quarters. Other changes inclue the Roman numeral of Sprint All-Star Race XXIV, and the use of the Car of Tommorrow template.
