Houston Astros Information and History

The Houston Astros is a professional baseball team out of Houston, Texas. The Houston Astros are a member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball’s National League. The Houston Astros were founded in 1962. The Houston Astros are owned by Drayton Mclane, Jr. The original name of the Houston Astros was called the Colt .45s, and was the teams logo from 62-64, and they played at Colt Stadium for three years.

The Houston Colt .45s became the Houston Astros on April 9, 1965 and opened in there new stadium the Astrodome with a 2-1 exhibition win over the New York Yankees. Some Houston Astros events that occured in the early years are: Jimmy Wynn set a Houston Astros record for Homeruns with 37 and 107 RBI, Don Wilson pitched a no hitter versus the Atlanta Braves. In 1969 Don Wilson pitched a no hitter versus the Cincinnati Reds, and Larry Dierker became the Houston Astros first 20 game winner. That same year the Houston Astros would finish with a 81-81 record. It would not be till 1972, the Houston Astros finished in second place in the NL West. A record that hit a milestone by a Houston Astros player is that Bob Watson is credited for scoring the 1,000,000th run in MLB history on May 4, 1975. That same year the Houston Astros hired Bill Virdon as the manager. The Houston Astros would not be competitive till the 1979 season, but the Cincinnati Reds were to strong and they lost the Pennant to them. After the 1979 season, the Houston Astros signed flame thrower Nolan Ryan to the first million-dollar salary per year. Joe Morgan was also added to bring veteran leadership. In 1980, the Houston Astros won their first NL West title but it was not easy. The Houston Astros faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles for a one game postseason playoff game. The Houston Astros won the game with a 7-1 score. In the playoffs the Houston Astros faced the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS and lost in five games. In 1981, the Houston Astros made the playoffs in the strike-shortened season but would lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. In 1983, Houston Astros Nolan Ryan became the all-time strike out leader against the Montreal Expos. After a poor 1985 season the Houston Astros fired their manager and in 1986 they hired Dick Wagner. That year the Houston Astros hosted the all-star game. The Houston Astros clinched the NL West, and Mike Scott pitched a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants on September 25. In the playoffs the Houston Astros faced the New York Mets but would lose in what was known at the time as the longest NLCS in history.

After the 1998 season, the Houston Astros underwent some changes Hal Lanier the manager was let go, and Nolan Ryan left to the Texas Rangers. In 1989, Craig Biggio entered the Houston Astros as a rookie and led the team in offensive categories. The Houston Astros also traded Larry Anderson for minor leaguer Jeff Bagwell in 1990. This trade is considered to be one of history worst trade ever for the Boston Red Sox. In 1992, the Houston Astros would make the worst trade list themselves by trading Kenny Lofton to the Cleveland Indians for Eddie Taubensee. In the 1991 season, the Houston Astros owner had intent to move the team to Washington D.C., but Drayton Mclane bought the team in 1993 who kept the team in Houston. The Houston Astros begin to show signs of a contender and in back-to-back years in 1997-98 they won the NL Central title, and in 1999. The only downside was that the Houston Astros failed to convert these regular season wins into playoff wins, and were eliminated in the first round.

In 2000, the Houston Astros moved to a new stadium called Enron Field. In 2001, the Houston Astros won the NL Central again, but lost in against the Atlanta Braves in the first roung of the playoffs. After the Enron scandal the ballpark was renamed to Minute Maid Park, and manager Jimmy Williams took over after Dierker retired as the Houston Astros manager. In the 2004 season, the Houston Astros acquired pitchers Roger Clemens, and Andy Pettitte. After a slow start Phil Garner was hired as manager and the Houston Astros managed a wildcard berth. In the playoffs the Houston Astros would defeat the Atlanta Braves and escape the first round of the playoffs. In the NLCS they would face the St. Louis Cardinals and would lose in seven, thanks to Jim Edmunds walk-off Homerun in the twelfth inning of game six. In 2005, the Houston Astros would startoff slow but would end well. In the playoffs the Houston Astros once again faced against the Atlanta Braves who they would defeat in four games. In the NLCS the Houston Astros faced the St. Louis Cardinals and defeated them in the final game at Busch Stadium to capture their first NLCS Championship. In the World Series the Houston Astros faced the Chicago White Sox and lost by being swept. In the 2006 season the Houston Astros would not reach the playoffs and would come as close as 1/2 game behind the St. Louis Cardinals. Following the season Jeff Bagwell left the Houston Astros and players like Andy Pettitte, and Roger Clemens filed for free agency. In 2007, on June 28 Craig Biggio got his 3000 career hits for the Houston Astros and retired that year after 20 years with the Houston Astros a team record.
