During the 2004, Nascar Sprint Cup Series season, the model used to make changes to the point system was the USAR Hooters Pro Cup. The first thing that changed was that five points were added for winning a race. Second a new formula was created to declaring a Champion. Third a cut was made after 26 races, with the twelve highest drivers and teams plus ties placed in the Chase for the Championship. In 2007, whatever drivers make the Chase for the cup receive 5000 points, plus 10 additional points for each race won during the first 26 races. Who ever is leading in points after the 36th race is declared the Nascar Sprint Cup Series Champion.

Some important information to keep in mind to keep the competition level up is that there are a number of awards given to race drivers finishing outside the Chase for the Cup. For example if you finish in 13th place, one spot looking outside in, is awarded $1 million, and a position on stage at the postseason awards banquet. Another important thing is that drivers who finish in the top 35 in the Nascar Sprint Cup Series, are guaranteed in next year's first five races, and do not need to qualify.
