The Atlanta Hawks begin in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks of the National Basketball League. When the NBL merged with the NBA the Hawk's were led by legendary head coach Red Auerbach, who led the hawks to the playoffs in their first season in the NBA. In 1951 the team relocated to Milwaukee and became the Hawks, in 1955 the Hawks moved to St. Louis, Missouri. In 1957 the Hawks became a good team and advanced all the way to the NBA Finals losing to the Boston Celtics. In 1958 under new head coach Alex Hannum the Hawks captured their first NBA Championship against the Boston Celtics. In 1960, and 1961 the Hawks once again made it to the NBA Finals only to lose to the Boston Celtics in back to back years. In 1968 the team moved to Atlanta, and became the Atlanta Hawks. The Atlanta Hawks had major show stoppers like "Pistol Pete" Pete Maravich and Lou Hudson, but it was not enough to put them over the top. In 1982 the Atlanta Hawks luck would change when they aquired high flyer Dominique Wilkins, and new head coach Mike Fratello, from 1985-1989, the Atlanta Hawks were an elite team winning 50 games or more each year. In 1993 the Atlanta Hawks would hire once player for the Hawks, new head coach Lenny Wilkins, who would later break the most wins for a head coach of 939 victories. The Atlanta Hawks have a drought of recent of not reaching the NBA playoffs of eight years. With young new talent like Al Horford the future looks bright for the Atlanta Hawks.
