The Toronto Blue Jays is the only Major League Baseball team based out of Toronto Canada. The Blue Jays are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. The Team was founded in 1977 begin in the Exibition Stadium and the Blue Jays moved to the SkyDome in 1989. In 2004 the stadium was renamed Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays are the only team outside the United States to win the World Series and the first to win a World Series in Canada.
The Toronto Blue Jays were originally owned by Labatt Breweries, with Imperial Trust and minority owners Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. The name Blue Jays came from the owner because the main brand of beer was blue. Jesse Barfield had a career year hitting .289, 108 RBI, 107 runs, 170 hits, 35 doubles, and led the Major Leagues in home runs, and set a Blue Jays team record. In 1987 the Blue Jays lost a close division race to the Detroit Tigers and George Bell was the first Blue Jays to be named Most Valuable Player(MVP) of the American League. In 1988 the Blue Jays finished third in the division. Blue Jays Fred McGriff finished the season with 34 home runs.
In 1989, the Blue Jays introduced the new retractable roof, the team was doing poorly until Cito Gaston took over the club and led the team to 77-49 record winning the American League East. The Blue Jays lost the American League Championship Series against the Oakland Athletics. In 1990 the Blue Jays finished to games back from the Boston Red Sox. That year David Stieb became the first and only Toronto Blue Jays to pitch a no-hitter. During the offseason that year the Blue Jays traded Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez for Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar. The Blue Jays also traded for Devon White. In 1991 the Toronto Blue Jays became the first team to draw over four million fans in one season.
In 1991 the Blue Jays aquired pitcher Jack Morris, they also acquired Dave Winfield. In 1992 the Jays clinched their second straight AL East title. The Blue Jays defeated the Oakland Athletics in the ALCS. The Blue Jays faced the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. In Game 6 of the Series with the Blue Jays up 3-2 the game was very close. The game was decided in the 11th inning, when Dave Winfield doubled down the left-field line, driving in two runs. The Braves fought back within in one run. The Blue Jays e became the first team to win the World Series outside of the United States.
In 1993 the Blue Jays had seven All-Stars, Duane Ward, Pat Hentgen, Paul Molitor, Roberto Alomar, John Olerud, Joe Carter, and Devon White. In 1993 the Blue Jays acquired Ricky Henderson from the Oakland Athletics. The Blue Jays posted a 95-67 record and won their straight AL East title. The Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 4 games to 2 in the ALCS, and the beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to 2 for their second straight World Series.
In 1994 the Blue Jays struggled and finished the season with a 55-60 record and in third place before the players strike. The Blue Jays were bought by Belgian-based brewer Interbrew. From 1995-2001 the new general manager for the Blue Jays became Gord Ash a Toronto native. This time period in Blue Jays history was a downward spiral that Blue Jays fans were not accustomed.
