Arizona Diamondbacks first defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS in five games, and then closed out the Atlanta Braves in five games in the NLCS to advance to the Arizona Diamondbacks first World Series. The Arizona Diamonbacks made history in the World Series by becoming the youngest franchise to win a World Series over the New York Yankees. Following the victory over 300,000 fans showed up for the victory parade held in November. In 2002, the Arizona Diamondbacks would win the the NL West again, but would be swept in the NLDS, by the St. Louis Cardinals.
In 2003 to 2005, the Arizona Diamondbacks would fall from the top to the bottom. In 2004, the Arizona Diamondbacks lost a Major League record 111 games and was the top ten worst record in MLB history in the last 100 hundred years. The only good thing that came from that year was that Randy Johnson threw a no-hitter on May 18th. During this time there was a lot of financial turmoil for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colangelo was forced to resign as managing general partner in 2004. In 2005, Wally Backman became the manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but was fired shortly due to some legal issues, and Bob Melvin assumed his position. The Arizona Diamondbacks decided to go into free agency and build a contender. The Arizona Diamonbacks acquired the following players: Shawn Green, Jose Cruz Jr., Javier Vazquez, Troy Glauss, Russ Ortiz, Royce Clayton, Dioner Navarro, and Brad Halsey. With all these acquisitions the Arizona Diamondbacks managed to finish in second place, and 26 game improvement from the previous year. That same year Josh Byrnes replaced Joe Garagiola Jr. as the new general manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2007, the Arizona Diamondbacks would return to the playoffs. The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Chicago Cubs in the NLDS. In the NLCS the Arizona Diamondbacks faced the Colorado Rockies, but would be swept out of the playoffs. 2007 saw a rise of young talent for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and they look getting back and making a serious run again in the playoffs.
